The horse as subject matter came to me quite unexpectedly while on a landscape trip to Easter Island. I was exploring sacred places as possible subject matter for landscape paintings but found instead, herds of wild horses roaming freely over the island. Never far from sight but utterly unapproachable; the horses seemed to embody the elusive quality I had been searching for in the landscape. I felt no choice but to paint them.
